Tavarus Ultimo

Margrave Tetrarch of the Precentor Tetrarchy

The newest of the four Tetrarchs, Ultimo rules the Precentor territories along the Antares Reach. His early life is shrouded in mystery. What is known is that he was born to a family of low social and political standing somewhere in the Precentor periphery. When his latent scion abilities manifested in early childhood, his family sent him to the scion enclave on Hestus. His unnaturally powerful abilities led him to be recruited to the Tetrarchy’s premier military academy on Alba Longa Prime, after which he was enlisted into the household legions of then-Primarch Arcadius. Proving himself a capable soldier and tactician, he was eventually appointed to the rank of Tribune, serving in numerous campaigns, gaining the respect of the legions, and eventually attaining the rank of Legate. Upon Arcadius’ death, Ultimo sided with Acheron and Tetricus in the brief civil war and subsequently fought in the Nexonian Trial, from which he emerged a noted hero.

During the Trial, he served under the new Primarch’s son, Titus Teuthus, and the two became close friends. When Teuthus rebelled, Ultimo chose loyalty to the Primarch over his friend. This show of loyalty, combined with Aurelia Diron’s advocacy, led Acheron to appoint Ultimo to prosecute the war against Teuthus. The Legate saw this task to utter completion, ending the rebellion when he personally slew Teuthus during the Siege of Arsia. For his role in ending the Titus Rebellion, Ultimo was gifted with an elevation to Margrave Tetrarch — to rule the Tetrarchy alongside Arcadius, Belisarius, and Tetricus.

Despite having served as a Tetrarch for two decades, Ultimo has been consistently reticent to embrace his role as a governor and politician, longing instead to return to his days of wartime campaigning. As a result, he leaves the toilsome affairs of governing his domain to his family — specifically his wife, the Empress Diron, and nephew, Nerve. Notably absent from his governing council, however, is his son, Tratos, whom he regards as a layabout playboy, undeserving of the honour of representing the family’s dynastic legacy.

This familial strife, coupled with a yearning to return to a simple soldier’s life, has weighed heavily on Ultimo’s psyche over the years. More recently, he has grown restless and uncertain in his position, prone to dreams that supposedly foretell his and the Tetrarchy’s downfall.
