Lance

Gutter Rat

In the aftermath of both the Nexonian Trial of Succession and the Titus Rebellion, Gregos Alpha became a dumping ground for children orphaned by years of constant war and deprivation. Most of them were scarred and tormented by what few memories of their early childhood years still remained. For Lance, this lingering trauma had a profound impact on his early development, stunting much of his emotional and social growth and leading him to withdraw from the world around him. Upon arriving on the planet at the age of 7, he was one of the lucky few to be immediately entrusted into Drake’s care and enrolled in the Gregosian Academy.

Lance initially excelled in his newfound academic environment, acquiring a reputation as a hermetic loner who eschewed building relationships with his peers — the one notable exception being Keyser, with whom he established a strong friendship. Over time, he grew tired of the Academy’s institutional constraints and eventually, with Keyser, dropped out at the age of 13, leaving Drake’s tutelage to scrounge and scrape on the streets of the capital city. Eventually, the two friends found their way into the service of a local smuggler, Quentin Talus, who put them to work as swindlers, thieves, and all-around urchin grifters. Later, Quentin also recruited Kris into his cadre of “gutter rats.”

In spite of his stoic and pensive demeanour, Lance’s quiet reservation only faintly masks a palpable strength and resilience that helps bind the group together. Yet his outwardly detached disposition belies a deeper turmoil, often creating momentary emotional chasms between himself and Kris and Keyser. He occasionally lets his guard down, but only when visiting his former mentor, Drake, whom he still regards as a surrogate father figure.
